Report: Jumblat Says Cabinet Can Practice President's Authorities

Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblat has reportedly claimed that Prime Minister Tammam Salam's government would practice the power of the president in case of a vacuum at Baabda Palace.

Pan-Arab daily al-Hahat quoted him as saying on Wednesday that there would be no vacuum given that Salam's cabinet is capable of taking over the president's authorities if lawmakers failed to elect a new head of state.

But it would be better to elect a head of state by the end of President Michel Suleiman's six-year term on May 25, Jumblat reportedly told his visitors.

Parliament is expected on Wednesday to fail again in electing a new president due to differences between the March 8 and 14 alliances.

The March 8 camp's lawmakers have boycotted the parliamentary sessions over claims that politicians should agree on a consensual candidate.

But the March 14 alliance has held onto the candidacy of Lebanese Forces chief Samir Geagea.

Jumblat, who heads the centrist National Struggle Front bloc, has backed the candidacy of Aley MP Henri Helou.

one of the many curses Lebanon is 'blessed' with is this narcissist. Had it not been for his alliance with M14, he would have had maximum of 5-6 MPs.

I wonder what is aluding to? We don't need a head of state as he is in effective? Is he trying to diminish the most important Christian seat by these words? Maybe it's time for Geagea to take the presidency and put these scum bags in their place! So much for a consensual president.

Machia I think you would find that your point is the one common denominator in lebanon today. Reality is though we are stuck with them for the time being. How long would be upto the new president, for a strong one regardless of who, can surely lay the foundations of economy education investment etc which will at some point result in less reliance on these leaders and as people gain their self respect lebanon can start to transition into a properly functioning society. It is my opinion that no amount of people power in the form of demonstrations and the like would presently have a real impact as one side will play their supporters against the other and we will see competition rallies instead of real results. Until then we must pick the lessor of two evils.

By the way Ibin, you see this picture of Jumblat, this is the avatar you should use, not Batrak Sfeir's, this avatar suits you perfectly, or as your baby Brofile would say, Berfectly. Bleeze, kirmelnah, start using Jumblat's for once.
