Tripoli Meeting Chaired by Miqati Reaches Roadmap to Protect Peace in City
Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Miqati chaired on Saturday a meeting to address the latest developments in the northern city of Tripoli in light of Friday's twin bombings, reported the pan-Arab daily al-Hayat on Sunday.
It said that the gatherers reached an agreement on a roadmap that will enforce security measures in the city that will protect civil peace and thwart any future terrorist attacks.
The meeting was attended by a number of Tripoli caretaker ministers, caretaker Interior Minister Marwan Charbel, acting General Prosecutor Samir Hammoud, State Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr, and the heads of security agencies.
Sources from the meeting said that the roadmap was discussed by President Michel Suleiman, Miqati, Charbel, and the heads of security agencies.
They also revealed that Saturday's meeting did not address the security and judicial investigations in the Tripoli bombings.
It instead stressed the need to bolster the security forces' capabilities with modern equipment that can detect explosives, because police dogs are not sufficient enough to that end.
In addition, they addressed the need to set up more security cameras in Tripoli.
Meanwhile, the daily An Nahar reported Saturday that investigations are focusing on the driver of a Ford vehicle that was parked near al-Salam mosque, which was targeted by one of the Tripoli bombings.
It said that the driver was seen arriving at the scene, where he parked the car and got out of it under the pretext of buying a cup of juice, but he soon ran away from the area shortly before the bomb when off.
Powerful car bombs exploded outside two Sunni mosques in Tripoli on Friday.
The first bomb struck in the city center at the al-Salam mosque as worshipers were still inside.
The second explosion struck just minutes later outside al-Taqwa mosque, about two kilometers away, near the port.
Miqati announced that the explosions killed 35 people and wounded 900 others, including 110 in a critical condition.
Judicial sources told An Nahar however that the death toll reached 45.
