U.N. Peacekeeper Wounded in Darfur

A U.N. peacekeeper was wounded Monday in an ambush against a patrol in southeast Darfur amid heavy tribal fighting in the restive Sudanese region, the United Nations said.

Unidentified assailants launched the assault against a patrol from the African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) in Ed Daein, the capital of East Darfur state, according to U.N. deputy spokesman Eduardo del Buey.

UNAMID has sent reinforcements to the site, the spokesman said, sighting a preliminary report.

Fighting between rival Arab tribes rocked Sudan's Darfur region over the weekend as 100 more people died in unrest that has already killed hundreds this year, tribal sources said.

Del Buey said UNAMID tried Monday to facilitate government mediation between the two tribes.
