Syrian Man, Woman Arrested in Dahieh over 'Security Plot'

A man and a woman were arrested on Wednesday evening in Beirut's southern suburbs on charges of plotting an act of sabotage, according to media reports.

“A man and a woman, both Syrian nationals, were arrested in Dahieh after the interception of their phone conversations with a group in Majdal Anjar revealed that they were plotting a security operation against Dahieh,” a Hizbullah stronghold, al-Jadeed television quoted a security source as saying.

MTV said the duo were apprehended by agents from the army's Intelligence Directorate.

Hizbullah sources told al-Jadeed that “Dahieh's security is a priority and the army is handling the matter.”

“Investigations are underway in a normal manner to know more details about the arrested group which was plotting attacks,” the sources added.

An Egyptian national was killed and two other people were wounded on Sunday when they were setting up explosive devices in Mount Lebanon's Iqlim al-Kharroub's region.

Several other explosive devices were found at their house in addition to a map containing three target places for bomb attacks -- al-Saadiyat, Wadi al-Zeina and Hadath.

On May 26, four people were wounded when two rockets hit the Beirut southern suburb of Shiyyah.

And on July 9, at least 53 people were wounded in a bombing in Bir al-Abed, also a Beirut southern suburb.

The developments come in the wake of Hizbullah's military intervention in Syria alongside regime forces. The party's key support has helped the Syrian regime recapture the strategic town of Qusayr near the Lebanese border and recently the Homs neighborhood of Khaldiyeh.

In the wake of the Qusayr battle, Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said his group “will be where it needs to be" in Syria which is facing a “very, very dangerous conspiracy.”

Nasrallah had previously justified the group's involvement in Syria by saying they were defending Lebanese-inhabited border villages inside Syria and Shiite holy sites in the Damascus province.

But during a May 25 speech Nasrallah warned that "if Syria falls in the hands of the Takfiris and the United States, the resistance will become under a siege and Israel will enter Lebanon. If Syria falls, the Palestinian cause will be lost.”
