Abbas in Beirut to Discuss Conditions of Palestinian Refugees Fleeing Yarmouk Camp

Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas is due to arrive in Beirut in July to discuss the bilateral ties with senior Lebanese officials, al-Joumhouria newspaper reported on Friday.

According to the newspaper, Abbas will focus on the conditions of Palestinian refugees, who fled the turmoil in Syria to neighboring Lebanon.

Hundreds of Palestinian refugees have fled to Lebanon after fierce clashes at the Yarmouk refugee camp in Damascus.

The daily said that discussions will also address recent international and regional developments and the repercussions caused by the the conflict in Syria.

Palestinian sources told al-Joumhouria that Abbas expressed hope that he would be able to meet with various political and spiritual leaders in Lebanon.

The Yarmouk district, near Damascus, is home to more than 112,000 Palestinians. According to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), there are altogether 486,000 Palestinian refugees living in nine official and three unofficial camps.
