Geagea, Hariri Vow to Remain in Contact until Vote Law Row is Resolved

Lebanese Force chief Geagea and al-Mustaqbal movement leader Saad Hariri have discussed the electoral law during a “lengthy phone conversation,” Geagea's press office said Tuesday.

Geagea and the former prime minister “held an extensive discussion on the latest developments on the electoral law,” it said.

“The two sides agreed to keep the channels of communication between them open to reach a joint and final” deal on the issue.

Their phone conversation came as the rival Christian parties intensified their contacts on the vote plan as the May 15 date for a parliamentary session aimed at voting on a new law approaches.

A meeting was held on Monday between Geagea and his rival in the March 8 alliance caretaker Energy Minister Jebran Bassil, who is a high-ranking Free Patriotic Movement official.

The meeting was attended by former deputy speaker Elie al-Ferzli and LF MPs George Adwan and Elie Kairouz.

Ferzli, who has been tasked by FPM leader Michel Aoun to discuss the issue of the electoral law with Geagea, has said that efforts are being exerted to avoid falling in the trap of the 1960 law that was used in the 2009 elections.
