Qatar Urges Support to End Syria Conflict

Qatar's prime minister on Tuesday called on the international community to support efforts to end the Syrian conflict after talks with the German chancellor who warned the whole region faced destabilization.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem al-Thani stressed the need for a solution "as quickly as possible", saying the Syrian people had sacrificed a lot during more than two years of violence.

"Against this background it is important that this chapter ends, that the people's efforts are realized and that the international community helps and supports in this area in a clear and effective way," Sheikh Hamad said, speaking through an interpreter.

Qatar started supporting the Syrian rebels after it became "frustrated" and gave up hope of reforms by Syrian President Bashar Assad, Sheikh Hamad told a joint press conference.

Chancellor Angela Merkel reiterated the need for a solution and above all for political talks. She said her meeting with the visiting prime minister had covered how to achieve conditions for that.

"The issues are anything but simple, the possibility of the destabilization of a whole region is however a given," she warned.

She told reporters that while she thanked Qatar for its "multifaceted" engagement, it did not mean that Germany and Qatar shared the same opinion "in every nuance".
