Five Injured in U.S. Office Building Shooting

Five people were injured Wednesday in a shooting at an office building in Phoenix, Arizona, police and local media reported.

It was not immediately clear if the gunman was in custody, according to the Arizona Central news website. The local ABC television affiliate reported meanwhile that three people had been hit by gunshot and two others injured.

The Phoenix Police Department said it had closed off the area after the reported shooting. "Please avoid area until further notice," it tweeted, providing no additional details.

The incident came as former Arizona lawmaker and shooting victim Gabrielle Giffords made a dramatic appeal to Congress in Washington, saying "you must act" to reduce the epidemic of U.S. gun violence.

Giffords was shot in the head in January 2011 while meeting with constituents in Tucson, Arizona, in an attack which killed six people including a federal U.S. judge and a 9-year-old girl, and wounded 14.
