Gaza Campaign by Numbers

November's eight-day confrontation between Israel and Gaza militants claimed the lives of 177 Palestinians, mostly civilians, and six Israelis, medical sources on both sides said.

A previous toll at the end of November stood at 174 Palestinian fatalities, and three more people have died of their wounds during December, according to emergency services in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.

There was no change in the numbers of fatalities in Israel, were rocket fire from Gaza killed six people -- four civilians and two soldiers -- and wounded another 240.

Most of the Palestinians killed were civilians, including 14 women and at least 37 children. According to figures supplied by the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR), at least 105 civilians were killed.

At least 1,300 people were wounded, the Gaza health ministry said.

In its latest monthly report published this week, the United Nation's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) noted: "Overall 165 Palestinians were killed in Israeli attacks, of whom 99 are believed to be civilians, including 33 children and 13 women."

Its lower toll is due to the fact it only takes into account Palestinians killed by Israeli attacks, excluding cases of fatalities due to "friendly" Palestinian fire.

The exact number of militants killed was not known, but is believed to be between 30-60. Senior Hamas official Mahmoud al-Zahar said "around 30" militants from various groups had been killed.

Islamic Jihad said it alone had lost 10 men.
