Berri: March 14 Camp Dealing Positively with Elections File

Speaker Nabih Berri stressed on Wednesday the need for the parliamentary elections to be held on time.

He said during his weekly meeting with lawmakers: “The March 14 camp is dealing positively with this issue.”

The speaker is keen on adopting a “wise and open” approach over discussions on the electoral law, the MPs quoted him as saying.

Furthermore, Berri said that positive developments have emerged that would help the March 14 camp return to the subcommittee meetings on the electoral law.

The speaker is keen on resuming activity at the subcommittees before the end of the holiday season, the MPs quoted him as saying.

A March 14 delegation had held talks on Thursday with Berri over the possibility of returning to the subcommittees.

MP Marwan Hamadeh had said after the talks that the delegation had stressed the need for reaching a positive solution that would entail the resignation of the cabinet in order to allow state institutions, including parliament, to resume their proper functioning.

The March 14-led opposition had announced in October its boycott of government-related work in light of the assassination of Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau chief Brigadier General Wissam al-Hasan.

The opposition accused Syria of being behind the crime and the government of covering up for the criminals.

It has been demanding the resignation of the government as a condition to end the boycott.
