Wigan midfielder Ben Watson suffered a broken leg in a collision with Raheem Sterling during his side's 3-0 defeat against Liverpool on Saturday.
Watson was forced off in the 32nd minute at Anfield when Liverpool winger Sterling's knee crashed into his right leg as they contested an aerial challenge.
The 27-year-old required several minutes of treatment and was eventually assisted off the pitch by Wigan's medical staff.
Latics boss Roberto Martinez revealed the full extent of the injury after the match and admitted there is a good chance that Watson will need surgery.
"It is a broken leg and we are going to miss him," Martinez said.
"He has a fracture and we are going to assess him now because maybe he will require surgery.
"We will see what the extent of the breakage is and what treatment he needs.
"We are really disappointed because he was at a good level."
