WikiLeaks: Gemayel Said March 14 Camp Prepared to Do Anything to Defeat Hizbullah

Phalange Party leader Amin Gemayel feared that Hizbullah’s takeover of Beirut on May 7, 2008, may be the end stages of a Syrian-Iranian operation to seize control of Lebanon, revealed a leaked U.S. Embassy cable dated May 11, 2008.

The WikiLeaks cable spoke of a meeting between Gemayel, then U.S. Charge d’Affaires Michele Sison, and then ministers Nayla Mouawwad and Marwan Hamadeh.

Gemayel relayed to the American official the March 14 camp’s concerns over the recent developments in Beirut, adding: “We should stop Iran and Syria otherwise we will soon begin answering to Damascus.”

He also suggested that the United States take “strict and serious measures against Iran and its agents.”

Furthermore, he noted that any settlement in this matter would be a catastrophe because it would give Hizbullah and Iran an incentive to gain more control in Lebanon.

The Phalange Party leader voiced the March 14 camp’s readiness to do “whatever is necessary to defeat Hizbullah.”

“We are prepared to present more martyrs, like my son Pierre, if necessary,” Gemayel concluded.
