U.S. Special Middle East Peace Envoy's assistant, Frederick Hoff, paid a two-day visit to Beirut earlier this week, revealed a political source to Akhbar al-Yawm on Wednesday.
A source from the U.S. Embassy told the news agency that his visit was aimed at discussing the implementation of United Nations Security Council resolution 1701.
Military sources revealed that Hoff held talks with Army Commander General Jean Qahwaji on the Israeli withdrawal from the village of Ghajar and how the Lebanese army would fill the void after the withdrawal.
The Embassy source said: “The army does not address this issue seriously because Israel has always voiced its intention to carry out the withdrawal, but nothing tangible has been achieved on the ground.”
The talks with Hoff did not address the political aspects of the withdrawal, it stressed.
The Central News Agency reported that an expert in geographic affairs and border demarcation accompanied Hoff on his tour among Lebanese officials, which included former minister Mohammed Shatah.
Hoff left Beirut for Amman on Wednesday.
According to An Nahar Wednesday, Hoff visited Lebanon at the head of a delegation two weeks ago.
