Berri ‘Disgusted’ Over Cabinet Deadlock, Vows to Fight Building Violations

Speaker Nabih Berri said Tuesday he was “disgusted” by the delay in the formation of the government adding that he made everything possible to solve the deadlock.

In remarks to As Safir daily, Berri lamented that the government formation efforts reached a standstill over bickering between the parties involved in the process.

“It turned out that there are properties in the cabinet and the state and not only on the ground that are being violated as well,” the speaker said in reference to the latest crisis on illegal construction in some areas of Beirut’s southern suburbs and the south.

“As long as I am alive, building violations won’t be legalized anywhere,” he said. The issue can’t be solved through a settlement or compromise, Berri added.

He stressed that his Amal movement and Hizbullah backed the Internal Security Forces in ending the violations.

“I am determined to pursue this matter till the end and I will insist on holding accountable all officers and ISF members who collaborated in covering up the violations or turning a blind eye to through bribery or dereliction of duty,” Berri vowed.
