Several Soldiers Wounded during Clashes in Army Pursuit of Suspect in al-Ghobairi

Several members of the army were wounded on Friday as they were pursuing a wanted suspected in Beirut's southern suburbs of al-Ghobairi, with Prime Minister Najib Miqati stressing the security forces' determination to control security in Lebanon.

The Army Command announced that two officers and a number of soldiers were wounded in armed clashes that ensued during the pursuit.

It said that the soldiers came under fire by various gunmen as they were chasing the main suspect whom media reports identified as Antar Karaki.

Reinforcements soon arrived where they cordoned off the area and began to conduct raids in the neighborhood.

A number of suspects were arrested, said the Army Command.

It added that efforts are underway to apprehend the main suspect and the remaining people involved in the clashes.

Miqati later telephoned Army Commander General Jean Qahwaji to inquire about the army's operations in al-Ghobairi and the safety of the wounded.

He stressed: “The security forces are determined to firmly control the security situation.”

“We will not be lenient with any attempt to destabilize the situation or undermine the authority of the state,” he added.
