Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour announced Friday that he “will not support a camp against another” during his chairmanship of the current session of the Arab League, saying he does not care about the domestic “overbidding” in this regard.
“Lebanon will not enter the mazes of Arab politics and will not support a camp against another,” Mansour said in an interview with NBN television.
Mansour on Wednesday took over the chairmanship of the 138th session for a six-month period from Kuwait’s deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled al-Sabah.
The minister stressed that “Lebanon’s stance will not contradict with the policy of self-disassociation,” noting that Lebanon’s representative “oversaw the discussions and deliberations, but when a stance needs to be taken, Lebanon would stick to its neutrality.”
Mansour pointed out that Lebanon can play a positive role, “especially that its objective policy prevented interference in Syria’s internal affairs and today it is receiving positive feedback from the Arab countries.”
“I do not draw up the state’s policy and I’m not a party. The Lebanese state has a policy and I’m only implementing it,” Mansour told NBN.
Lebanon has endorsed a so-called self-disassociation policy towards the conflict in neighboring Syria ever since a popular revolt erupted there in March 2011.
“We do not care about overbidding and we are harmonious with ourselves,” Mansour said.
Asked about his recent trip to Mauritania and the latest developments in Imam Moussa Sadr’s case, Mansour said: “I made contacts with the premier given that he is a personal friend of mine and I spoke with the foreign minister in order to set up a meeting with (Moammar Gadhafi’s spy chief Abdullah) al-Senussi and we managed to achieve that.”
The minister revealed that a long session of questions and answers was held, saying he will not announce any details in order to keep the investigations confidential and prevent any speculation.
He also revealed that he met in Cairo with “the Libyan foreign minister who was very responsive and promised to intensify the investigations with the aim of unveiling the truth.”
Meanwhile, state-run National News Agency said Mansour briefed President Michel Suleiman on his visit to Mauritania and his meetings there over the issue of Imam Sadr.
He also put Suleiman in the picture of the meeting of the Arab League Ministerial Council and its deliberations and outcome.
