Death Toll from Tripoli Clashes Rises to 7
The death toll of gunbattles that have been raging in the northern port city of Tripoli since Monday rose to seven, the state-run National News Agency reported on Wednesday.
NNA said there were heavy clashes between the rival neighborhoods of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen overnight during which B7 and Energa rockets were used.
While the fighting eased, intermittent sniper fire shook several of the danger zones, including the highway that links Tripoli to the northern district of Akkar in the area of al-Tabbaneh and al-Mallouleh, it said.
The Lebanese army has heavily responded to the sources of fire in an attempt to end the clashes that lasted till dawn Wednesday.
In addition to seven people killed, more than 70 were injured in the clashes, NNA reported.
The residents of Bab al-Tabbaneh, the mainly Sunni district of Tripoli, and largely Alawite Jabal Mohsen have clashed on several occasions, a sign of the spillover of the Syrian war into Lebanon.
Bab al-Tabbaneh backs the revolution against Syrian President Bashar Assad while Jabal Mohsen is a staunch supporter of the regime.
