Army Denies Report that Rmeileh Cell was Planning to Shoot Down UNIFIL Chopper

The Army Command denied on Tuesday a media report that a three-member cell arrested in Rmeileh was planning to shoot down a United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon helicopter.

It stressed in a statement that investigations with the group are ongoing.

Al-Akhbar newspaper had reported on Tuesday that the cell arrested in the Shouf town of Rmeileh over the weekend was planning to shoot down a UNIFIL chopper.

Initial investigation showed that it was plotting to bring down the helicopter with a rocket at the Rmeileh landing field which is used by the peacekeepers operating in the South for logistics, the newspaper said.

The army command said in a communique on Saturday that the military intelligence arrested the three men in Rmeileh after Israeli-made equipment was found in their possession.

The army raided the residences of the suspects and seized 1,211 detonators, several electric-detonators, Israeli-made devices used to ignite mines, Russian and American-made anti-personnel mines, Israeli-made mortar shells, 21 hand grenades, weapons and other equipment.

According to al-Akhbar, the army later arrested a fourth person, a Palestinian, in the southern city of Sidon.

But As Safir daily reported that the number of suspects with links to the network has reached five and the army intelligence is seeking to seize a sixth.
