Hizbullah Urges Release of Saudi Cleric, Slams Kingdom’s ‘Undemocratic’ Actions against Citizens

Hizbullah voiced on Monday its concern over Saudi Arabia’s actions against religious figures in the kingdom, the last of which was the “wrongful” arrest of Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr.

It urged the Saudi authorities to “halt the undemocratic actions against the peaceful and legitimate demands of Saudi citizens,” calling on them to respect religious figures.

Nimr has not committed any crime, all he asked was the minimum amount of civil rights that are stipulated by all international laws, added the party.

He is seeking to end the discrimination of Saudi authorities against citizens, it said.

It slammed the “violence of the security forces against the peaceful protests in al-Qatif region, which led to deaths and injuries” among the people.

Hizbullah therefore demanded the immediate release of Nimr.

A prominent Shiite cleric and critic of the Saudi government, Nimr, was arrested in Saudi Arabia’s eastern province on Sunday, reported Agence France Presse.

Two people were killed and a dozen other protesters were wounded during the clashes that erupted when police opened fire to disperse a demonstration against the cleric’s arrest.
