The Israeli army kidnapped two Lebanese shepherds in the southern town of Rmeish near the border between the two countries, UNIFIL spokesman Niraj Singh said Tuesday.
He said the Israeli army informed U.N. peacekeepers that they arrested the shepherds at 10:15 am after they allegedly crossed the U.N.-drawn Blue Line.
The peacekeeping command is investigating the incident and is in contact with Israel over the issue, Singh said, stressing that UNIFIL Commander Maj. Gen. Alberto Asarta urged the Jewish state to release the shepherds.
Israel has detained Lebanese civilians in the disputed border region in the past, and regularly conducts overflights into southern Lebanon.
Beirut has previously filed complaints to the U.N. over similar arrests, arguing that they violate Security Council Resolution 1701.
