Aoun: MPs are Inciting EDL Contract Employees to Action

Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun stated on Tuesday that Electricite du Liban contract employees will not reach their goals through their latest actions.

He said after the Change and Reform bloc’s weekly meeting: “Some MPs, who we will not name, have been inciting the employees to action.”

The contract employees escalated their protests on Tuesday as they held a sit-in at the company’s headquarters in Beirut’s Mar Mikhael area.

A dispute occurred between the Internal Security Forces after the riot police demanded protesters not to leave the sit-in hall and to stop using loudspeakers.

They have been demonstrating for the past four weeks against the cabinet’s failure to approve their full-time employment.

Aoun added that the number of contract employees actually exceeds that of the rest of the workers at the company.

“The ISF are not assuming their responsibilities in protecting the employees,” he stressed.

“The people’s regard to a position in public institutions is decreasing. The ministers and MPs have duty to improve this image,” noted the FPM chief.

Furthermore, the MP held President Michel Suleiman for the current “crippling” of government functioning, saying: “We will meet at the national dialogue and speak before everyone.”

“One side cannot take control of the entire country as it requires the assistance of all powers,” he remarked.

Suleiman had issued on Monday an invitation to all the concerned powers to resume the national dialogue on June 11.
