President Michel Suleiman on Thursday stressed that “any solution must happen in coordination with Syria” instead of being imposed by outside forces, noting that Lebanon and Syria enjoy a state-to-state relation.
During talks with visiting Austrian President Heinz Fischer at the Baabda palace, Suleiman added: “We hope no foreign military intervention will occur in Syria.”
“The relation between Lebanon and Syria is a state-to-state relation and Lebanon does not deal with individuals. It rather deals with the will of the Syrian people and its freedom of choice in selecting its authorities,” Suleiman said.
The president also stressed “the need to continue to seek a just and comprehensive solution to all the aspects of the Arab-Israeli conflict, according to the resolutions of international legitimacy, the Madrid Conference and the Arab Peace Initiative.”
He noted that “Lebanon rejects any form of naturalization of Palestinian (refugees) on its territory.”
For his part, Fischer voiced support for U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan’s peace plan for Syria, rejecting “any military intervention.”
And as he said he understands Lebanon’s so-called self-dissociation policy on the Syrian crisis, Fischer added, “Lebanon is a country that neighbors Syria, and if I were a Lebanese politician, I would exert utmost effort to avoid the spilling of the conflict into my country.”
