Geagea Denies Crisis in Ties with Bkirki

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea denied on Sunday there was a crisis in his party’s ties with the seat of the Maronite church in Bkirki despite severe criticism of Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi’s statements on Syria.

In remarks to a visiting delegation of women from the LF branch in Zahle, Geagea admitted that he had a “sharp reaction” to al-Rahi’s statements despite his respect for the patriarch’s seat.

“We will always respect Bkirki,” he said.

Geagea’s remarks came despite the LF boycott of a mass celebrated in Bkirki by al-Rahi on the occasion of the Feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Geagea lately criticized the patriarch for allegedly defending the Syrian regime and endangering Christians in the region.

He has also warned that the LF would voice its objection to any harmful political statement made by al-Rahi.

The patriarch has expressed fears that the violence in the Arab world could turn the Arab Spring into an Arab winter.
