Salam turns 'new page' with Syria as he meets Sharaa in New York
Prime Minister Nawaf Salam met Thursday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, and Minister of State for International Cooperation in the UAE Reem Al Hashimon.
The meetings took place on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York and focused on ending the Israeli attacks and occupation and preparing for the post-UNIFIL phase.
On Wednesday Salam participated in a U.S. multilateral summit alongside the GCC countries, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Turkey. He also chaired a high-level meeting held at the joint invitation of Lebanon, the European Union, and the UNDP and met with Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sánchez, Vice President of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council Abdullah Al-Alimi, EU Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Šuica, Romanian President Nicușor Dan, Crown Prince of the State of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, and Egyptian Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly.
Salam said in a post on the X platform that his meetings focused on intensifying efforts to de-escalate tensions and spare Lebanon and the region further confrontations," while strengthening Lebanon's Arab, regional, and international relations based on respect for sovereignty, non-interference, and mutual interests."
He stressed the necessity of a full Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory and an end to its aggressions, contributing to stabilizing the situation and enabling residents to return to their towns and villages, and called for mobilizing support for the recovery and reconstruction process.
The meetings also discussed expanding economic, investment, and regional connectivity cooperation, particularly in the fields of energy, electricity, transport, and infrastructure, as well as leveraging international expertise to modernize administration and digitize government services.
During his meetings, Salam underscored Lebanon’s commitment to reforms, strengthening state institutions, and extending state authority over all its territories, ensuring that weapons and decisions of war and peace remain solely in the hands of the state.
Salam stated that Lebanon has been working to turn a new page with Syria and strengthen ties based on trust, mutual respect for sovereignty, and shared interests.
During his discussions with Sharaa, the two leaders reviewed bilateral agreements and explored ways to boost regional connectivity, with a focus on electricity, railways, and energy infrastructure.
