Phalange Party leader Amin Gemayel called on Friday for producing a new national pact in Lebanon that would place the Lebanese people’s interests above all else.
He said during his ongoing trip to Italy: “A new pact based on the Taef accord should be established.”
He made his statements after holding talks with Italian Defense Minister Giampola di Paola.
Gemayel relayed the Italian officials’ call to fortify Lebanon against regional developments, as well as their concerns over the developments in the Arab world.
“Rome believes U.N. Security Council resolution 1701 to be the key to stability and security in Lebanon and the region,” he added.
“Italy urges Lebanon to assume its responsibilities towards guaranteeing security and prevent any future assaults against the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon,” he said.
For his part, di Paola called on Gemayel to continue on playing “a central role in maintaining unity among all Lebanese factions.”
He stated that his country will maintain its support for Lebanon regardless of changes in the Italian government.
Earlier this week, the Phalange Party leader had held talks with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano and former Defense Minister Franco Frattini.
