Report: Aoun receives no response from US, Washington wants unified paper

President Joseph Aoun has been surprised by not receiving any response from the U.S. or Israel regarding his announcement that Lebanon is willing to hold negotiations with Israel, informed sources said.

“Aoun was expecting U.S. contacts, but Washington considered that what he declared did not require action, and is still calling on Lebanon to take practical measures reflecting its commitment to the arms monopoly plan,” the sources told al-Akhbar newspaper.

The U.S. was meanwhile reviewing with the Lebanese Army’s command the military’s measures south and north of the Litani River.

“The U.S. remarks over Aoun’s stance regarding the negotiations are focused on that the contacts with Lebanese officials did not show the presence of an understanding on negotiations, and Aoun and Speaker Nabih Berri should have engaged in negotiations with Hezbollah to reach a paper that represents Lebanese authorities and enjoys Hezbollah’s approval in order to allow the U.S. to mediate effectively,” the sources told al-Akhbar.
