The Lebanese Army’s weapons monopolization plan is not complete and it resembles “half a plan,” diplomatic sources told MTV.
“It will be discussed in today’s cabinet session and the debate will be adjourned to a later date to allow for further scrutiny of its clauses and terms in a profound manner,” the sources said.
“The implementation hinges on Israel’s withdrawal from the border points, in order to reassure the Shiite camp in the country. Its success also requires enhancing the capabilities of Lebanese security forces,” the sources added.
The U.S. stance is meanwhile “still divided between those pushing for withdrawing arms by force and through ground raids, those calling for slapping sanctions on Lebanese figures or even on Lebanese Army officials should implementation fail, and those focusing on convincing Israel to withdraw,” the sources said.
Sources in Washington also told MTV that “the U.S. State Department is showing great interest in restoring financial balance in Lebanon as part of the negotiations with the International Monetary Fund, in parallel with the arms file.”
