Flights to be suspended during Nasrallah funeral as US warns citizens to avoid area

Lebanon’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation announced Tuesday that flights from and to Beirut’s Rafik Hariri International Airport will be suspended from 12pm to 4pm Sunday, during the funeral of slain Hezbollah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.

Hezbollah chief Sheikh Naim Qassem has called for broad participation in Nasrallah's funeral as a demonstration of the group's strength.

The funeral that will be held on Sunday at Beirut’s Camille Chamoun Sports City Stadium, near Beirut’s airport. Nasrallah will be later buried on the outskirts of Beirut "in a plot of land… between the old and new airport roads," Qassem said.

Hezbollah supporters and invitees from 79 countries are supposed to fill the stadium and the neighboring streets.

The U.S. Embassy in Beirut meanwhile reminded U.S. citizens to avoid the funeral and the airport areas on Sunday.

“U.S. citizens should exercise caution in the vicinity of any large gatherings. Monitor local media and … follow the instructions of local authorities,” the Embassy urged.
