Tyre Protestors Shout Anti-Bassil Slogans Over Severe Power Rationing
Several residents of Tyre blocked on Sunday the road at the southern coastal city’s entrance to protest electricity cuts but the army later reopened it, the National News Agency reported.
NNA said the residents held a sit-in outside the Electricite du Liban building at the city’s northern entrance and hoisted banners against “the policy of rationing and corruption at the energy ministry.”
The protestors also shouted slogans against Energy Minister Jebran Bassil, asking him to resign, it said.
They warned that they would take escalatory measures after their “symbolic” sit-in, which caused heavy traffic at the city’s entrance, in case their demands were not met.
On January 31, the cabinet tasked a ministerial committee with studying the process of leasing power-generating ships. The committee has held several meetings so far.
Lebanon has been suffering from severe power rationing as Bassil has warned that the situation could get worse if the government doesn’t take quick measures to resolve the crisis.
