Sami Gemayel: Any Foreign Soldier Who Crosses into Lebanon Must Be Immediately Fired at

Phalange Party MP Sami Gemayel criticized on Monday the Syrian army’s infiltration of Lebanese territories, calling on the Defense Ministry and Lebanese army to fulfill their duties in confronting the violations.

He said: “The army should perform its constitutional and legal responsibilities towards the Lebanese people and immediately open fire at any foreign soldier who crosses into the country.”

Since the eruption of anti-regime protests in Syria in March, the Syrian army had infiltrated Lebanese territory numerous times in order to thwart smuggling attempts, according to Syria.

The last of the infiltrations took place on December 27 when three Lebanese civilians were shot dead by the Syrian army in the Wadi Khaled region in Akkar in northern Lebanon.

Addressing Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn’s statements that members of the al-Qaida terrorist group had entered Lebanon, Gemayel said: “The government should take a unified position on the matter given that various official contradictory remarks had been made on the issue.”

He urged immediate action on the ground to determine whether the group had in fact infiltrated the country.

Ghosn had stated that the group had infiltrated the Bekaa town of Arsal, saying that he had obtained tangible information on the matter.

Interior Minister Marwan Charbel meanwhile denied the presence of the organization, explaining that Lebanon cannot be a base for al-Qaida.
