United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon commander General Alberto Asarta expressed optimism that the Lebanese will be able to resolve their internal disputes without foreign intervention.
He said in an interview to the daily An Nahar published Saturday that the latest developments in Lebanon will not pose a danger to the country’s future or UNIFIL troops deployed in the South, which he said is “still the most stable region in Lebanon.”
Furthermore, he said that the troops haven’t taken any precautionary measures, adding that they have nothing to do with the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.
Regarding the village of Ghajar, he described it as a “difficult and complicated matter that needs time” to be resolved, noting that the most difficult step, which was Israel’s decision to withdraw from it, has been solved.
Meanwhile, UNIFIL Director of Political and Civil Affairs Milos Strugar told Voice of Lebanon radio on Saturday that the situation in southern Lebanon is “very calm”, ruling out the possibility of an eruption of a war between Lebanon and Israel.
He also denied claims that countries participating in UNIFIL plan on decreasing the number of their troops, as the internal situation in Lebanon is not connected to the international troops’ mission.
