Miqati ‘Open’ to Any Proposal on Wage Hike

Premier Najib Miqati’s sources said Sunday that the PM has expressed openness to any suggestion over the wage boost decree after the Shura Council backed it with amendments.

The sources hoped in remarks to An Nahar daily that the cabinet members would take into consideration the economic circumstances when discussing the decree.

Their comments came after Labor Minister Charbel Nahhas told the newspaper on Saturday that his suggestion would be put up for discussion again.

The issue is on the agenda of the cabinet that is scheduled to hold a session at Baabda palace on Wednesday.

Last week, the cabinet approved a wage boost proposal made by Prime Minister Najib Miqati, whereby the minimum wage increased by LL100,000 to LL600,000, salaries under LL1 million by 30% up to a LL200,000 increase, and salaries above LL1 million by a 20% increase up to LL275,000.

The Shura Council approved the cabinet’s decision but called for amending the form and not the value of the salary hike.

Other important issues on the 54-item cabinet agenda on Wednesday include the amendment of the law 462 that regulates the electricity sector.

The implementation of a $1.2 billion project that has been approved by the cabinet is linked to the amendment of the law as stipulated by the government decision taken on Sept. 7.

Following Wednesday’s cabinet session, the government is expected to convene on Dec. 27 but its agenda hasn’t been set yet, An Nahar said.
