Cabinet Approves Advances for OGERO, Election Supervision Committee

Lebanon's government approved on Friday an advance worth 150 billion Lebanese Pounds for the benefit of State-run internet company OGERO, in addition to credit allocations for the committee tasked with observing the country's upcoming parliamentary elections.

Information Minister Melhem Riachi said after the meeting that the Cabinet has approved “an advance worth LBP 150 billion for the benefit of OGERO, as well as credit allocations for the Election Observation Committee.”

He added that all other pending issues “will be discussed at the Presidential Palace next week.”

The Cabinet, which was set to tackle 63 items on its agenda, convened at the Grand Serail and was chaired by Prime Minister Saad Hariri.

Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq told reporters before he joined the meeting, that the “agenda includes an item on approving the expenses for the electoral supervision body.”

"I want to emphasize the fact that elections will take place on their set date. Our discussions will tackle electoral mechanisms rather than the date of elections," he affirmed, adding that the heatedly debated biometric card remained the subject of discussion amongst political parties.
