Hizbullah Slams Wage Hike, Supports Syndicate Coordination Committees Strike
Hizbullah’s education office slammed the cabinet’s wage boost decree as it voiced its support to the Syndicate Coordination Committee call for strike.
“The cabinet’s (wage hike decree) is offensive and unfair and doesn’t reflect any seriousness in dealing with the issue,” Hizbullah’s education office said in a statement on Thursday.
On Wednesday, Hizbullah ministers Mohammed Fneish and Hussein Hajj Hassan voted in favor of Prime Minister Najib Miqati’s wage hike proposal knocking down Labor Minister Charbel Nahhas’ package, which included a more comprehensive proposal, but according to Fneish requires “further discussions.”
“We support the measures announced (by the Coordination Committees) and reject the cabinet’s way of handling the wage raise and the living crisis,” the statement of Hizbullah’s education office added.
It stated that the decision taken by the Syndicate Coordination Committee is righteous as “we confirm the importance of developing education in Lebanon.”
The Committee called for a strike on December 15 to protest against the government’s wage hike decree.
The wage hike decree suggests an increase in the minimum wage by LL100,000 to LL600,000, salaries under LL1 million by 30% up to a LL200,000 increase, and salaries above LL1 million by a 20% increase up to LL275,000.
