Araji Says Mafias Rendering State Incapable of Stopping Corruption

MP Assem Araji said on Thursday that various "mafias backed by political sides" are rendering the government incapable of stopping corruption as he warned of an economic collapse if related authorities fail to address the matter.

“The numbers related to the corruption file raised during the parliament meeting are enormous and only indicate a tragic situation that portends the worst,” said Araji in an interview with VDL (93.3).

The MP warned of an “economic collapse and deterioration in social services if related authorities remain negligent to address corruption,” he called for “the implementation of reforms in the electricity sector and at Lebanon's ports.”

Relating to the controversial wage scale file under discussion by the parliament, he said: “Putting an end to squander and corruption would provide for the salary scale. But the state is incapable of that because of mafias supported by political sides.”

The lawmaker pushed all the Lebanese factions to agree in a bid to approve the salary scale.
