Quadripartite Meeting in Paris Postponed Over Conflicting Agendas of Officials

A meeting that was scheduled to be held on Sunday between France, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar over the political crisis in Lebanon was postponed over conflicting agendas, French foreign ministry sources told pan-Arab daily Asharq al-Awsat.

In remarks published Monday, the sources said the Paris meeting is considered “postponed and not cancelled.”

A French diplomatic source told An Nahar daily that contacts between France and its allies to guarantee a way out of the crisis are ongoing.

However, well-informed sources told the newspaper that the meeting on the level of foreign ministers is facing “difficulties.” They did not explain as to what obstacles the conference was facing.

Asharq al-Awsat said the Lebanese crisis was at the top of French Foreign Minister Michele Alliot-Marie’s talks in Cairo and Amman. One of her most important stances was that the Special Tribunal for Lebanon “should not be taken as a political hostage.”

“No one can paralyze its work,” she said.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy is expected to discuss the situation in Lebanon during a press conference in the presence of the diplomatic corps at noon Monday.
