Strong 6.2-Magnitude Quake Shakes Mexico

A strong 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck off Mexico's Pacific coast on Tuesday, slightly shaking towns, but no immediate damage was reported, authorities said.

The quake struck at 1051 GMT in the ocean 105 kilometers (65 miles) southwest of the tourist resort of Manzanillo, and 641 kilometers (398 miles) west of Mexico City, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

That quake was followed by a smaller 5.4 magnitude earthquake just nine kilometers away and along the same fault line minutes later, at 1058 GMT.

The epicenter of the second earthquake was 96 kilometers (60 mile) southwest of Manzanillo, the USGS said.

Luis Felipe Puente, Mexico's national civil protection coordinator, said on Twitter that authorities in western Jalisco state reported that the earthquake was "slightly felt in the region of Huerta and Cihuatlan, without damage for the moment."

Officials in neighboring Colima state also did not report damage after checking the region, said Ricardo de la Cruz, director general of national civil protection.
