Report: Wage Boost Discussions Focus on 40% Raise

The 2012 draft state budget includes an amount of LL850 billion to cover the expenses of salaries for state employees, An Nahar daily reported on Sunday.

It said that the current dialogue between the different parties is over the adoption of a 40 percent raise for those earning the minimum wage of LL500,000 in both the public and private sector.

The rate would be downgraded as the amount of the salary rises, the newspaper reported.

In accordance with such formula, Labor Minister Charbel Nahhas is formulating a system that would be implemented in the private sector while Finance Minister Mohammed Safadi is seeking to arrange a system that would be implemented in the private sector.

Last week, the Shura Council turned down a cabinet decision to increase wages.

The cabinet had agreed to raise the minimum wage to LL700,000 from LL500,000. It also raised by LL200,000 the salaries of those earning under LL1 million. Workers whose wages range between LL1 million and LL1.8 million would get LL300,000, according to the cabinet decision.

The Shura Council’s rejection of the government’s decision renewed the talks at the price index committee, which includes representatives of the Economic Committees and the General Labor Confederation.
