Olympic Hurdles Champion Pearson Withdraws from World Champs

Olympic champion Sally Pearson has withdrawn from the track and field world championships to be held in Beijing in August.

The 28-year-old Australian broke a bone and dislocated her left wrist after crashing over a hurdle in a race in Rome on June 5, and announced Monday she needs further surgery this week.

The recovery process will give her time to take a rest from competition, Pearson says, and "I think it will be a very good mental and physical break for me leading into the Olympics next year."

She says, "At this stage Rio is the highest priority, I'm just going to wrap myself in cotton wool until then and make sure that I don't injure myself."

Pearson won silver in the 100-meter hurdles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and gold at London in 2012.
