Geagea: We Must Keep Door Open for Hizbullah to Return to Dialogue

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea stated that the Lebanese opposition is nearing its goals, criticizing sides that believe that opposition means occupying downtown Beirut, blocking roads, and stirring unrest.

He told Abu Dhabi’s al-Ittihad newspaper: “The real opposition is what we are doing today through following up on the government’s work and issuing positions on all that is being proposed in Lebanon.”

Addressing the funding of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, he said: “The current government will not take the decision to have Lebanon pay its share of the STL budget, therefore leading the country towards a very dangerous crisis.”

“Should Hizbullah maintain its opposition to the funding, then changes may take place on the internal scene,” stated the LF leader.

On his ties with Hizbullah, Geagea remarked: “I have tried to hold dialogue with the party, but they have never responded.”

The party is seeking to expand its powers in the region, “but we should always keep the door open for it because the time will come when it realizes that it needs serious dialogue,” he noted.

Addressing the developments in Syria, he said that developments will lead the country towards democracy.

“Had the Lebanese government been more cohesive, the repercussions of the Syrian developments would have been less severe on the country as they already are,” he added.

He warned Lebanon against opposing U.N. Security Council sanctions against Syria because that would put it at odds with the world.
