Sehnaoui Launches 3G Service in Beirut, Suburbs

Telecommunications Minister Nicolas Sehnaoui launched on Thursday the internet 3G service which will cover Beirut and its suburbs.

"Our target is to move ten years forward in internet speed and we hope that the technical difficulties will be fixed in the coming weeks,” he said during a press conference at the American University of Science and Technology.

"The prices will start at $19 per month for 500 megabytes," he added.

The 3G service will help the two state-run mobile phone service providers Alfa and MTC develop their networks, which are still working in 2G.

The internet speed will be 20 times faster and the prices will be five times cheaper.

"This will put Lebanon on the map as having one of the fastest connections in the region at the lowest prices," Sehnaoui said.

"The 3G service will cover all of Lebanon by May 2012," he stated, noting that "after this step, Alfa and MTC will be able to switch to 4G through updating their network stations."
