Massive Rally in Aleppo in Support of Assad

Syrian state television on Wednesday aired a broadcast of what it said was a rally in support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the second city of Aleppo, Syria's economic hub, claiming it was attended by a million supporters of the embattled leader.

The pro-regime gathering in Aleppo comes a week after a similar rally in the capital, Damascus.

Damascus and Aleppo are the largest cities in Syria and economic powerhouses. The regime is counting on their support to halt the momentum of a 7-month-old uprising.

Also Wednesday, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said security forces and pro-government gunmen killed 10 people in the central district of Homs.

The U.N. says more than 3,000 people have been killed in a crackdown on dissent and international pressure is building on Assad to step down.
