Report: Nasrallah, Aoun Agree to Task FPM Chief with Controlling Presidential Elections File

Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah and Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun agreed during their meeting on Thursday on three central issues that will emphasize understanding between the two sides, reported the pan-Arab daily Asharq al-Awsat on Saturday.

Sources from the March 8 camp told the daily that “Aoun was tasked once again with controlling the presidential elections file.”

“Hizbullah will go ahead with what Aoun agrees upon,” they added.

The two sides also agreed to bolster understanding “given the media claims of disputes between them.”

In addition, they stressed the need to “jointly confront internal affairs, starting with the presidential elections, while reserving each side's right of freedom to maneuver.”

Hizbullah also voiced its support for Aoun's approach regarding security appointments, while noting that “it is not in the party's interest for vacuum to reach the army command given its battle against terrorism,” explained the sources.

“Hizbullah is confident however that Aoun will not allow matters to reach a point that would bother the party or threaten civil peace and the general interest,” they told Asharq al-Awsat.

Nasrallah and Aoun had held talks on Thursday on latest local and regional developments.

They stressed the need to confront takfiri terrorism and safeguard Lebanon's stability.

Lebanon has been without a president since May when the term of Michel Suleiman ended without the election of a successor.

Disputes between the rival March 8 and 14 camps over a compromise candidate have thwarted the polls.

Hizbullah's Loyalty to the Resistance and Aoun's Change and Reform bloc have been boycotting the electoral sessions over the dispute.
