Venezuela to Unveil Economic Reforms

President Nicolas Maduro said Tuesday he will announce economic reform measures this week, as Venezuela grapples with severe inflation, shortages and other woes.

The heir to the late leftist firebrand Hugo Chavez said he wanted to "win the economic war along the path of socialism".

Speaking on his weekly television program, Maduro, a former bus driver, said he would announce the measures Friday.

Maduro said he will take part in a May Day march that day, and appealed to the working class to support the reforms he will announce. He gave no details of them.

Venezuela has the world's largest proven oil reserves but its economy is in serious trouble.

Inflation came in at nearly 69 percent last year and people endure acute shortages of goods as basic as toilet paper and soap.

The country has also been hit by the sharp drop in global oil prices. Its main source of hard currency is petroleum sales.
