Four Killed in Colombia FARC Clash

Three FARC guerrillas and one soldier were killed in a military operation in central Colombia, the army reported Sunday.

The clash took place Saturday in the department of Meta and one guerrilla was also taken captive, the military said in a statement.

The fighting comes as the leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the Colombian government have made strides in peace talks in Cuba to end the country's half-century of internal conflict that has killed around 220,000 people.

The FARC agreed to a unilateral ceasefire in December and the parties also recently reached an agreement to remove the country's landmines.

The Marxist guerrilla group has warned that the ceasefire may not last if the government continues its military operations against its forces.

The military said Saturday's operation was prompted after guerrillas gathered to receive extortion payments from workers in the area.
