STL Appeals Chamber: Bellemare Must Provide Sayyed with Certain Witness Statements

The Special Tribunal for Lebanon Appeals Chamber ruled on Friday that statements of certain witnesses must be provided by Prosecutor Daniel Bellemare to former General Security chief Jamil Sayyed swiftly, it said in a statement.

The decision confirms in part an earlier ruling by Pre Trial Judge Daniel Fransen ordering that the documents be disclosed, it continued.

“With regards to the statements of other witnesses, the Appeals Chamber returned the matter to the Pre Trial Judge for further consideration,” it added.

“Bellemare must now work with the Tribunal’s Victims and Witnesses Unit to ensure that the disclosure of such statements will not present risks to any persons nor impede the Ayyash et al proceedings,” the statement explained.

“This appeal was in the context of Sayyed’s ongoing efforts to obtain documents in the STL Prosecutor’s possession, which are necessary for him to pursue his claims before national courts against those allegedly responsible for his previous detention in Lebanon,” it concluded.

The STL issued arrest warranted against four Hizbullah members Salim Jamil Ayyash, Mustafa Amine Badreddine, Hussein Hassan Oneissi, and Assad Hassan Sabra accusing them of being involved in the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri
