Jumblat: Revision of Civil War Necessary to Understand Real Reasons behind Palestinian Involvement

Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat noted on Monday that the wars that have taken place in Lebanon have been part of a “great settlement” aimed at harming the Palestinian independent decisions and usurping Lebanon’s national will.

He said in his weekly editorial in the PSP-affiliated al-Anbaa magazine: “A critical revision of the Lebanese civil war is necessary, as is a deep examination of the real reasons why Palestinian armed groups were involved in it.”

“Perhaps it was part of an Arab and international decision to eliminate the Palestinian Liberation Organization,” he remarked.

“Political courage requires all Lebanese and Palestinian sides to calmly study that period and all its aspects in order to derive the necessary lessons,” Jumblat stressed.

Furthermore, he praised Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ speech at the United Nations Security Council last week, saying that it demonstrated his strong character and brave political spirit.

He noted: “He has come to complete the historic struggle of late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.”

“Political struggle can at times share the same importance as armed struggle if it is properly managed,” he said.

The MP stated that Arafat faced several wars and Arab and international conspiracies in order to preserve the independent Palestinian decisions, slamming what he called the “systems of hegemony that have long considered Palestine to be affiliated with them.”

Abbas had succeeded in placing the entire international community in a crisis over recognizing a Palestinian state or “leaving the Palestinian territories exposed to the Israeli right and some Arab and regional forces that are keen on obstructing all solutions and maintaining open-ended wars,” added the PSP leader.
