Policeman Killed in Shebab Attack in North Kenya

A Kenyan policeman was shot dead and another seriously wounded in a new attack by suspected Shebab militants in northeastern Kenya on Saturday, police said.

The shooting, which occurred near the Dadaab refugee camp, came a week after the al-Qaida-affiliated Somali rebels executed 28 civilians in the far northeast.

"The attackers were on foot, and trailed the officers for about 100 meters (yards) before firing at them at a close range," regional police official Musa Yego said.

He said the attackers were thought to be Shebab members or sympathizers, adding they disappeared into a refugee camp.

Last Saturday the Shebab seized a bus heading from the far northeastern border town of Mandera for the capital Nairobi, executing 28 non-Muslim passengers in what they said was revenge for police raids on mosques in the troubled port of Mombasa.

Kenya has suffered a series of attacks since invading Somalia in 2011 to attack the Islamists.
