Sudan Arrests Man over Murder of Spanish Embassy Worker
Sudanese authorities have arrested a man on suspicion of murdering a Spaniard working at his country's embassy in Khartoum, who was found stabbed to death in his home, the police said Friday.
The victim was head of the embassy's visa section and had been living in the city for three years, police said.
He was found at his home in Khartoum's Garden City neighborhood on Monday.
Khartoum state police Chief Mohamed Ahmed Ali said the accused was Sudanese and had made a "judicial confession to committing the crime."
The "incident is criminal, and has no connection to any political or terrorist entity," Ali said, adding that the accused had acknowledged knowing the victim for six months.
He said the young man used to call on the victim to ask about work opportunities, and that police found a number of items stolen from the victim when they arrested the man in Jazeera state, south of Khartoum.
Ali was speaking at a press conference attended by Spanish Ambassador Juan Gonzalez-Barba Pera, who expressed "satisfaction" at the arrest.
