At Least Two Killed in Somalia Attacks

At least two people have been killed in Somalia in separate attacks, including a car bombing in the capital Mogadishu, officials and witnesses said Thursday.

Police said one person died and another was seriously wounded on Thursday when an explosive device attached to their car was remotely detonated in the south of the capital.

Witnesses at the scene identified the dead man as a soldier.

Late on Wednesday one soldier was killed and two others injured in a car bomb explosion near the town of Qoryoley west of the capital.

The regional governor, Abdukadir Nur Sidi, said the bomb went off after security forces arrested the driver -- a suspected suicide bomber who was driving to the capital.

"The security forces managed to intercept a suicide bomber who wanted to carry out an attack in Mogadishu. The car he was driving was loaded with explosives and went off as he was questioned in a separate location," he said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, although Somalia's internationally-backed government and security agencies have been hit by a recent sharp upsurge in attacks claimed by the al-Qaida-linked Shebab rebels.
